Sometimes the truth hurts. NY Times: 'Vows' Weddings and Celebrations

This is a hard one. I can very easily see both sides of the coin here.

On one side you have two people who meet and go from being infatuated to falling madly in love with one another despite the fact that they each have spouses. They obviously did not set out for this to happen.

On the other side you have the wronged spouses, the children who feel betrayed and a mess that will go on long after 'vows' were exchanged.

Does that fact that these two tried to do an honorable thing despite their selfishness make up for it....no, not really, not in my humble opinion. While I find it incredibly brave of them (getting honest and all), I think that perhaps they should have exercised better judgment in many ways, not the least of which would include 'airing' this to the NY Times. I also question the newspaper's willingness to portray this 'love story' without taking into account the other parties (as well as innocent children) involved.

Sure, maybe Ms. Riddell wanted this 'out in the open' but was that to simply assuage her own guilt-ridden conscience? One has to wonder. Like Ms. Riddle, I'd like to think that love conquers all and that there is hope that with best intentions, the kids can get over this betrayal. But speaking from my own experience (where I was not nearly as brave but most definitely as selfish), I have to say that healing is slow at best and sometimes, damn near impossible for those on the hurting end of this equation. (And no, I am not suggesting that Ms. Riddle isn't hurting). But why glorify this by running a full page write up in the NY Times?

And to answer the reader who asked:

"Is it a sign of our times that personal responsibility to one's spouse and children takes a back seat to selfish, self-centered love?"

Um...in a word yes. Do you not see the divorce/affair statistics? Are you living in a cave? Selfishness seems to be the watchword of the day. Narcissism, and instant gratification all seem to run rampant. We still want to be admired, we want others to find us attractive and it often comes at the cost of our loyalty to our spouses and those vows we so solemnly took on our wedding days.

And perhaps what is making everyone squirm about this is the mirror that is being held up to our marriages and relationships. Can your intentions really pass muster? Are you absolutely/unfailingly faithful to your spouse/significant other? Would they agree if they were aware of every single instance of your interactions with people of the opposite sex, be it at the workplace, on Facebook ,or on some other social 'networking' site? In other words, would you do it in front of them...isn't that the test?

So while I wish these people the best and hope that EVERYONE involved (especially the children) heal. I still have to wonder why Ms. Riddle's and Mr. Partilla's bravery and honesty had to include the breakup of their respective marriages.

A Toast To Love

As I approach my second year wedding anniversary, I am overcome by emotions. Sometimes it is hard to believe I have been married to Erin for two short years – and even taking into consideration we have been together for going on four years – I just feel like we have been together much longer.

I am still madly in love with my husband. I still have to pinch myself that I get to be with him.

All marriages have ups and downs and of course ours has had it’s own share of problems. There are still adjustments being made and things to learn about each other, there is the ‘blending’ of a new family...yet, there is no one I’d rather spend my time with than my husband. There is a true sense of sharing between us, a sense that even when there are problems we want to work them out.

Take for instance our past weekend. We took a long weekend together and we had a very nice time. We golfed (twice), we visited the Lake Chautauqua region (which was just wonderful), and we went shopping. We talked, we laughed, we shared wonderful meals together, we kissed, and we made love. We also discussed some of the issues we’ve been facing and worked together to try to come up with solutions.

So this weekend, I plan to celebrate with my husband and to be with some close friends. Part of the weekend will be tinged with sadness as we attend the memorial service of one of my husband’s colleague – but afterwards there will be an intimate dinner and the joy of being a couple. That is what life is about sorrow and joy in equal measure and sharing all of it with your loved one.
I love you, Erin – happy anniversary to us.

My Love

It's been a while since I've written about how much I am (STILL) enamored with My Love - SirErin.

We still connect in ways that at times takes my breath away.

I am still just as smitten with him.

I am still amazed that he chose me to be his wife - HIS WIFE.

And perhaps, that is the most important thing of all...I am HIS wife and he is MY husband. To me, and this is sad, as never before, this relationship transcends all the mundane bullshit the world chooses to throw my way and makes me realise just how lucky I really am.

I love you Erin - with all my heart.

Always,
C~

Little by little...

I just wanted to say 'thank you' to my wonderful husband. For putting up with me through my ups and downs and for doing his best to help me feel that I am really a part of his life/family.

Slowly, little by little, we are creating a 'home' in this house together.

I love you Erin.

********

This is my first day at home - I have left my past job, next Monday I will begin another. Yes it's a jump (Erin's daughter asked me if I hadn't just started a job - note to self - must maintain air of responsibility - how do you say to a little girl - yeah but it sucked and I had to get out of there for my own sanity! - sorry...Erin I will never talk to K~ like that until she is way older...)

Anyway - this morning was amazing...but let's begin with the week-end.

First of all I want to apologise to dearest C2 for the craziness that I inadvertently inflicted on you...my dear i am so sorry - please don't be cross with me - I wanted to meet you for lunch and I still want to see you - I am very sorry...

To begin with my former 'manager' and I do use the term loosely....threatened me with my own going away party. I came so close to telling her to fuck off...but this is one of the reasons why I left...

Things my last day were crazed....

For Halloween/Blessed Samhain evening, Erin and I had a wonderful, very sexy evening...as it should be. (Happy New Year to all my Pagan brethren out there...)

The next morning we woke up (in each other's arms of course) and we got up went for a walk to the store to find orange juice (for mimosas - yeah go us!) and breakfast fixin's. En route to the store we stopped at a new shop that sold items benefiting the American Cancer Society. Lo and behold there was an antique dining set, complete with a gorgeous table, buffet and 5 chairs all for $250!!!!! The table alone was worth $200 easily. It is gorgeous. We then went home, ate, drank some mimosas (yeah go us!) and went to finish purchasing the dining set. We brought home the table and chairs and spent most of the rest of the beautiful day outside cleaning it up. It is seriously beautiful. It is the first ime I have had a 'real' set of furniture let alone an antique set. Erin as well. We are both very happy.

Saturday night we went shopping and got ready for our Sunday school (PSR) duties. We enjoy planning and our students as well. We were going to have to sub for the other teacher so it was going to be a bit of a challenge.

Sunday we got up and went to teach. Class was indeed a challenge, however we did pretty well (at least I think) - the other class was not as animated as our kids but still a nice group of kids.

We came home, I made some lunch and then the boys (Erin and J~) went shopping while I stayed home and did laundry. I had asked Erin to get me a NY Times (Sunday) because I truly have been longing for what I call a 'New York Times' Sunday - a Sunday spent just reading the times, drinking coffee and relaxing.

Erin came home, we built a fire outdoors and had tea. I read 'The Times while he did some computer work.

All in all this was a wonderful weekend. Made all the more special by my love and our becoming more cemented as a couple 'nesting' and creating a home of our own to share.

Flash forward to this morning...woke up with Erin - took a shower and er...um...(*ahem*)...made some tea for Erin (which my darling you forgot here), got breakfast for the kids and saw them off to school...something I have not done in years and something I think I could do every day if I was lucky enough to be able to do so....

I ran some errands (I still have a lot to do this week) - got some stuff for me, stopped at the grocers, bought us some dinner victuals and cleaned up a little bit. Tonight Erin and I will go get our buffet to complete the rest of the dining set and we will have a nice dinner.

Tomorrow, we will get up and get to be home together for a while. I will go volunteer to help 'get the vote out', come home, we will vote together, have some friends over and a nice evening.

I could get used to this life - it's not that it is not hectic and I am sure after a while I'd get bored - but I could see myself being a full-time mom and housewife - it's weird in some ways - strange, and nostalgic.

At any rate I will be blogging a bit (hopefully) this week as well...I have some thoughts about life, politics, fashion and society (what else is new?) to share...

....back to getting ready for my husband to come home...I am off to find his slippers, newspaper and a pipe...all I need is a pearl necklace and an apron...(*winks*)....

Testament to Love

It’s been a while since I have updated on this subject – though it is a subject near and dear to my heart.

I am talking about my love, our love.

For sweetest weekend my fair Knight decided to take us out of town to one of our favourite haunts, Columbus. He took me to the B&B that we went to not long after our engagement. We even had the same room. Our hostess is gracious and has a wonderful humour and makes excellent quiches. The house is filled with antiques but best of all we got to drive down and be in Columbus together.

I adore Erin. I adore our conversations. I adore all the little things he does for me/for us as a couple. I believe in my heart that this marriage is going to work and that I am extremely lucky.

Case in point; I am leaving my job – therefore I am ‘cleaning’ things up. I had to go through all my old voice mails. Out of 90 some VMs, 80 of them were from Erin, just little msgs, telling me he loved me, he was thinking of me, sometimes they contained slightly ‘naughty bits’ – but mainly just heart sent reminders that I am loved. I truly hope I do the same for him.

Last night we took Erin’s daughter K~ to the Democratic HQ in Mentor, OH. She is doing a ‘scrapbook’ about the candidate she chose, Barack Obama. Her eyes lit up and she was greeted and talked to by a very enthusiastic young woman. She was thrilled to be there and a bit overwhelmed. But she was still happy (even though she had to miss a skating party to do this). I am proud of K~, prouder still of dad who probably could have (and in some ways should have) spent this time alone with his daughter but instead asked me to tag along. I am humbled and honoured to be included in such activities. Afterwards, we had to go to a local clinic so I could take a ‘drug test’. We then stopped at a local doughnut shop. On the way there, we passed what Erin and I assumed was a strip joint – we joked about going in together. Leaving the doughnut place, we laughed about the possibility of K~ telling her mom: ‘Hey mom, guess where dad and C~ took me last night (drug testing, strip joint, etc.)..’ – it is moments like this that make me thrilled to be with Erin. We can joke together and have fun; we can have very serious and deep conversations; we have a passionate connection and we are ‘together’ on so many levels – I have never had this in a relationship before.

This morning I was musing about my own mother’s marriage and somehow I feel I have managed to do better than my own parents. Not to compare and contrast, the times were different. However, in terms of a marriage and relationship in general, I feel what Erin and I have together is a rare a precious thing and I hope and pray it lasts forever.

Mid-Wife Crisis: I'm Dreaming of Divorce

AND NO...

I am NOT dreaming of a divorce. I just think this is a very well written and honest article....besides...she is not really suggesting people get divorced.

The Knight's Quest

When I think about my love - I of course reflect on all of the wonderful qualities he possesses.

When I try to relay that to others, I have a 'story' I share - the women in the audience may appreciate this more...I hope you will ALL see just how special he is...

When we ordered our invitations, we forgot to order cards that told our guests about our reception's location etc.

We had gotten through about 40 of our 50 invites (and yes he helped with EVERY ONE), they were completed AND SEALED, when I gasped and freaked out - realising our mistake. Nonplussed, my love put together a reception card on the computer. We then went to Kinko's where he picked out an almost exact match to the stationery we had in our invite. He gave the person at Kinko's the file, explained how he wanted it printed up. He took the batch, cut the cards so we had one to go with each invite (and some extra) - and he went home and STEAMED OPEN EVERY SINGLE ENVELOPE so we could put the reception cards in....

Yeah.

The other night over gaming with our friends (we play a role-playing game that is patterned after the story of Camelot) - one of the game's features is tasks/quests that the knights are assigned. Knights who are betrothed are assigned tasks in order to get married. I relayed to the group my fair knight's quest.

Today at the impromptu party the girls here threw for me, I told the story to them - to a woman (and even one of the guys) they were all duly impressed.

There are many reasons that I am madly, passionately in love with Erin - why I want to marry him - but the greatest one is the fact that he is a marvel to me, that he is so willing to step up to the plate, that he has 'arrived' and is self-actualized. We will have trials, ups and downs - but there is no one on earth I would rather face life with than my fair knight, Sir Erin.

Ooh La La

...and then some.

(*happy sighs*)

I am so very madly in love.

Still.

Today on my desk calendar were the wedding traditions for brides: Something old, new, borrowed, and blue....

I need the borrowed thingy.

Tonight I am going out with some girls to shop, eat/drink and have fun.

Next week is CRAZY...ending with my wedding to the sexiest guy on earth. Joy, excitement and yes still jittery. I can't wait.

I love you Ooh La La - and I always will.

'Just get me to the church on time...'

There’s so much I want to say. For once in my life, words seem to fail me.

I am jittery, nervous – ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ comes to mind – although without the Elizabeth Taylor gorgeous bitchiness – but a bit of bitchiness would serve me well right now – and I am sure if you asked him, Erin might say I am being a bit bitchy….

I have a lot of little things to get done. There have been some emotional upheavals. I’d like to vent and I’ve been sort of asked to…

I will vent about one cruelty and be done with it…

This weekend, I was speaking with my ex (my son’s father) about getting married in general (because of the logistics involving my son and other reasons) – he managed to blurt out I would be divorced in 2 years time (I of course told him he was full of shit) – I had a Ken Y~ (BTW go to hell Mr Y~) moment. He was being negative, and cruel, for no other reason than to be so – petty jealousy….but why? I am not going to deny that there may be residue of feeling still lingering – not on both sides of this divorced fence (well, not mine anyway)….but perhaps on his end and I am not trying to sound like I am all that and a bag of chips. But he has always been a bit vindictive…so be it. I called Erin on my way back home and I was crying so hard I had to get off the phone…I know I upset Erin…

Why do people do such things? Even if you do think that of one of your friends, exes, acquaintances, family members – unless they ask you shouldn’t you just shut the fuck up? Why are people so willing to visit their negativity on others? Why are people so mean and cruel?

As far as venting about the wedding – I just want things to be done so I can get on with the sacredness of the ceremony, my honeymoon, and loving Erin.

The reasons why I love this man have been documented over and over in this forum…they are too many to mention here again. As innumerable as the stars in the heavens….I will list off two…

Up until yesterday, when my daughter gave birth to her 5th child safely, I had a knot in my stomach – not only did he know that he had a knot in his stomach too – we are so very empathic with each other that it actually scares me at times and assures me that metaphysical powers DO indeed exist in humans.

He counted all the favors for the tables to be sure we have enough….

I am going to let that last on sink in for a moment…..

To my darling daughter – congrats Rissa I love you with all my heart. To my new grandson – welcome to the world little one.

To my family – thank you for all of your love and support.

To Liam, Ken and Chris – my favourite metaphysical ghost hunters the same to all of you.

To those of you out here in blogdom who have been reading and commenting or commenting off line to me – thank you for all of your kindnesses.

To the love of my life….

I will walk down the aisle to meet you in our sacred space and, in front of God, our family and our friends I will pledge my life to you, as well as my heart and mind and soul to our love. Always and forever, I love you Erin.

...to have and to hold...from this day forward..

Silda Spitzer Elle June 2008 - ELLE

...that is UNTIL....

Some articles from this month's Elle magazine caught my eye last night as I waited in the hair salon (see the link above and the one in the word 'article'). I am not usually one to be looking at 'glamour' zines mainly cause I don't even aspire to be that way....but these were both well written and thought provoking articles about love, marriage, fidelity and what happens 'after' everything well...happens.

So what DOES happen to us? Some things like THIS ARTICLE hits WAY too close to home.

What is is the kills the most 'mythic' faerie tale romance?

Lack of communication? One too many nights being ignored, neglected, feeling like you are the only one that doesn't matter as your significant other deals with everything else in their life that does? Being told one to many times 'not tonight dear'? The silent treatments, the unresolved fights, the not having enough time for yourself, your job, your family but then still being expected to be sexy and hot and a Victoria's Secret model?

Yeah...

Do I sound bitter? Perhaps. But this blog has been nothing if not a way for me to think (out loud and I apologise - that is, I guess if it bothers you...) - a way to be introspective.

As I get ready to be married again - I obviously have a lot on my mind, jitters, concerns, excitement the whole nien yards. I wonder about the pitfalls ahead and think about which one I will miss, not be paying attention too or simply willingly abandon myself to...and which will he?

This blog has been a teacher for me, a sounding board, a bell of resonance. I am thinking seriously of just killing it because I am not sure I have much else to say and other than a very few close friends (maybe some family) who really pays attention? And this isn't a 'poor little me' jag - it's just the truth. Some days, I don't even know what my own truth is - and frankly, philosophically isn't that what life is? The quest for our truth.

So I hope you all fare well while I go off to meditate, contemplate and try to get my 'shit' together. I feel like disappearing for a while and then resurfacing when all the secret landmines, obvious warnng signs and all other manner of subterfuge have vanished...

As to the question of 'what does happen to the happily ever after' - perhaps I am neither qualified or ready to tackle that question or brave those answers.

Love to you all, as ever...

Colette

The Mourning Dove and St. Peter

“Wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weights you down.” ~Toni Morrison

These past couple of days have been a bit emotional. I am cleaning out my old house and purging things so I can move in completely with Erin. In going through old paperwork, I came across the stuff I found on the Internet when my ex cheated on me.

Today, I had to go to the county clerk of courts in order to get a certified copy of my divorce decree.

I don’t want to feel emotional about these things - I want to let them go. I FEEL though – I can’t seem to stop feeling things. There’s a fear attached to the feelings. The fear of failing – the fear of messing things up. Erin is being patient and kind but I don’t want to lean on him because it’s HIM that I am afraid of letting down…and myself as well.

The fear is not the over-riding feeling – I am excited and happy to be getting married to Erin – I have never loved like this before. I want this marriage to work and to last. So I need to get rid of this excess baggage – stop giving it the weight that anchors me to the past and rise above the emotion in order to love more fully the way we are meant to love one another.

For Erin...

(These are two re-posts because I want him to know how much I still feel the same - how much I still love him - how happy he makes me - so neither of us forget just how special this love really is...)

********

The sun, moon, and stars...

I have nothing...

I have no father to give me away (nor to give permission for my hand in marriage for that matter)...

What do I bring to this marriage? I feel like a skewed version of Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ (‘Kiss me Kate’) only I don’t have the proper dowry to present to my future lord and master...

I want to give you, my love, the moon and the stars – were they mine to give…..but what I have to offer is *MY* love, my ability to be a good wife/helper/ partner; My willingness to contribute to the finances, to the work around the house, to help with the children. Yes this is all so very unromantic – but so very necessary...

We have no ‘song’ that’s ours. Songs will come on the radio that will make me think of him – of our love – but there is no ‘our song’...this does not worry me per se...

Perhaps the reason is because both of us love ‘world music’, new age music, alternative music, goth/dark-wave music….perhaps that does not lend itself to the type of ‘old standards’ our parents fell in love to.

I want to give you the gift of birdsong, of crickets singing in the grass, of wolves howling to the moon…all the sounds of harmony...the music of the spheres...the planets’ majestic symphony...

I come to you - not adorned in rubies, emeralds, and sapphires but clothed in the raiment of my heart, mind and soul.

*********

I love you, Erin

To my dear Mr. E:

I love you.

I love you with a love I did not think I possessed. I love you with my body, mind, and spirit. I love you with a passion put to use. I love you with laughter, with joy and yes even with tears.

I want to be with you every day. I want to wake up to you every morning, go to bed with you every night, and start the entire cycle over again.

Every single day, I thank God/dess for you. Every single day I am glad we met, glad I gave you my phone number, ecstatic you called me.

I have never felt so healthy, so loved, so happy. I have never had so much fun.

You are the best lover I have ever had. You are one of the best men I have ever had the pleasure to know. You are one of the most intelligent men I know. You are a wonderful father, friend, teacher, and husband.

I feel lucky, I feel blessed, I feel alive because of you.

Thank you, Erin, for all the gifts you’ve bestowed upon me – may I be able to return them in kind.

"You had me (from) at...

Flux".

Yeah inside joke.

Last night, Erin and I found 'our' song. It will be the song that we first dance to at our wedding reception.

We picked out our reception music. We laughed and we cried (tears of joy).

There's a lot going on in my life right now - that of familial concerns, work crap, nervousness over getting married (not hesitation - just wanting to get things done and completed and then relax but it always seems that 'planning' goes on ad nauseum until the day of the event...). Details to be worked out and finalized....

Regardless I am STILL madly, passionately, in love with Erin and I plan to be for the rest of my days...he is my Knight in Shining Armor, he is my hope, he is my joy, he is my dawn, my twilight, my midnight...he is all that he is meant to be and all that ever will be...forever.

I know we love each other deeply and I am thankful for all the blessings we share.

Longer than...(continued)...

{This is a letter I receive from Erin last evening (it was in my e-mail box this morning) - I believe after reading this you will all understand why I am so madly in love with this wonderful man....}

"My Dearest C~,

Longer than I've been listening to "Longer Than", I've never known all the words. Thank you for the video (with included lyrics). I would love to play this at our wedding. What do you think about having it for our first dance together?

Longer than you ever knew I was in love with you. I didn't have a name for it on our first date, and I want to make sure it was more than simple infatuation and being with someone new who seemed to really care.

Longer than I wanted to wait, I wanted to kiss you. I remember holding your hands, lying on the floor, and exchanging our first "I love you".

Longer than the slow advance of glaciers, my soul wanted to be married with you. The church process made things painful at times, and just the general preparations and timing of things is hard on me at times waiting, but I can't think of anything else that I would so willingly wait for than to be with you.

Longer than any list I have made for you, you offer me more than you realize. The things you do for me, the love you send my way, and the mysteries of yourself that you reveal to me, I feel are all but a trifle of who you are and what you have yet revealed.

Longer than the infinite heavens, I want to be the best husband for you.

Longer than, everything, I'll be in love with you.
Erin

2008

...begins with a bang...and a whimper....

Ya know - what gives?

We had an OK New Year's celebration I say OK thanks to a couple of seriously ill-behaved children that I think Erin and I both wanted to pummel - they were monsters and made things rather dicey with our gathering - but it was nice seeing our friends nonetheless - we missed some of our 'other' friends/family - perhaps some other party/some other time...

Is Mercury in retrograde? What is up with things breaking/failing/falling apart? I don't get it.....

I don't want to start out the New Year with a negative post - this is the year that I am going to get married to my love and I want all the negative vibes to be left in 2007 - where they belong.

God/dess please keep our perspectives bright and negativity at bay as we approach the day of our union - may our love and our lives be filled with joy and hope, love, peace and harmony.

Sexy Tractors, Manor Mosquitoes, and a Piano...

(LOL don't you just hate titles like this?)

So....

This weekend my love and I decided to go to Punderson State Park - have much needed get-away and do some camping.

Unfortunately, it rained for several days (yep we needed to build an Ark) before we went - I really did not want to go due to the weather. But go we did and it was wonderful...well pretty much.

The night we arrived, we ate at the lovely 'Manor' outside. The food was excellent the 'live' entertainment - well let's just say we wish him dead (sorry did *I* just type that?). Anyhow he did a version of the song 'She thinks my tractor's sexy' (a KennyChesny song) and I was about to go through the roof. However, poetic justice was served (a dish best eaten cold) when the plug on his equipment was pulled (by some little girl) while he was doing Bono (U2's) song 'One'. The guy was rather upset and said something to the affect of bringing his generator 'the next time' to which Erin asked: 'Why is it going to generate better music' - I nearly peed my pants laughing - but I don't think this guy heard....that's OK...Note to self: never go for the 'live entertainment' on Friday nights in the summers..)

We set up camp - had a camp fire and retired for the evening. It was great.

The next morning we got up - cooked over the campfire, spent the day riding our bikes and because it had ained (and indeed rained while we were there), I was nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes. I have sustained approximately 40 bites. Ah the joys of camping. One wonderful thing did come out of Saturday though, we got to talk to one of the sales managers up at the 'manor' about hosting a reception there and it proved to be our best idea yet. This will be the perfect place for us to have our celebration after our wedding ceremony - I can't wait. I am so excited.

Saturday night (after me being a bit grumpy) - we made love in our tent and then took a walk out under a full moon - we were up until close to 4AM.

Sunday we woke up and broke camp and headed home.

Sunday afternoon we put stuff away, did laundry and finally in the evening cuddled together and watched the movie 'The Piano'

The movie has always been one of my favs and the soundtrack is haunting - Holly Hunter did an amazing job in her role.

At any rate - blissful as usual that I have someone to share all this wonders with - I will leave all to your lives whilst I go itch my skin off in private.

XOXO

Colette
